This multi-unit facility serves as temporary housing for families suffering from abusive family relationships. The building program of 23,171 square feet included 21 units of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, administrative offices for F.I.T., a community room and support spaces. It doubled the organization's program capacity.
This new building was designed to match a period structure that formerly occupied the site and was only to be demolished and replaced by a parking lot. The site is located within the Historic District of Manchester, and the building's design needed to respect the scale and detail of the district.
This was the first new construction of its kind in the area and, to maintain the brick and wood-framed scale of the neighborhood, cold-formed metal framing (also known heavy-gauge steel stud and joist framing) was employed. This was the first multi-storied structure in New Hampshire to use this system.
This project received a Preservation Award by Manchester Historic Association, a Merit Award from Plan NH, and an Excellence in Construction Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors.
